Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax applicable throughout India which replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments. The GST is governed by a GST Council and its Chairman is the Finance Minister of India.

Under GST, goods and services are taxed at the following rates, 0%, 5%, 12% and 18%. There is a special rate of 0.25% on rough precious and semi-precious stones and 3% on gold.

In addition, 15% or other rates on top of 28% GST applies on few items like aerated drinks (coldrinks), luxury cars and tobacco products.

What is GST Registration?

Every business carrying out a taxable supply of goods or services under GST regime and whose turnover exceeds the threshold limit of Rs. 20 lakh / 10 Lakh as applicable will be required to register as a normal taxable person. This process is of registration is referred as GST registration.

GST registration is set to begin in India from 1st July 2017. All persons classified are taxable under GST are required to obtain GST registration and begin filling GST monthly returns from the month of September 2017.

GST registration documents detail

PAN card of the business or applicants

GST registration is linked to the PAN of the business. Hence, PAN must be obtained for the legal entity before applying for GST registration.

Identity and address proof along with the photograph

The following person are required to submit their identity and address proof along with  clear photographs. Documents like PAN , passport , driving license , aadhar card voter identity card can be submitted as identity proof  for GST registration.

1 . Proprietary Concern – Proprietor

2 . Partnership firm/LLP – Managing /Authorized/Designated Partners ( personal details of all partners are to be submitted but photos of only ten partners including that of Managing Partners to be submitted)

3 . Hindu Undivided Family- Karta

4 . Company – ManagingDirector , Directors and the authorized person

5 . Trust – Managing Director , Directors and the authorized Person

6 . Association of Persons or body of individuals

7 . Local authority- CEO or his equivalent

8 . Statutory authority- CEO or his equivalent

9 . Other person in charge

Business Registration Document

Proof of business registration must be submitted for all types of entities. For proprietorships there is no requirement for submitting this document , as the proprietor and proprietorship are considered the same legal entity.

In case of partnership firm the partnership deed must be submitted. In case of LLP or company , the incorporation certificate from MCA must be submitted. For other types of entities like society, trust, government department or body of individuals , club , registration certificate can be provided.

Address proof for place of the business

For all places of business mentioned in the GST registration application , address proof must be submitted . The following documents are acceptable as address proof for GST registration.




For own premises

Any document in support of the ownership of the premises like latest property tax receipt or municipal Khata copy or copy of the electricity bill.

For Rented/ leased Premises

A copy of the rental agreement with any document in support or the ownership of the premises of the lessor like latest property tax receipt or municipal Khata copy of electricity bill. If the rental agreement or lease deed is not available , then an affidavit to that effect along with any document in support of the possession of the premises like copy of electricity bill is acceptable.

SEZ Premises

If the principal place of business is located in an SEZ or the applicant is an SEZ developer , necessary documents/certificates issued by Government of India are required to be uploaded.

Incuding all other cases

For all other cases , a copy of the consent letter of the owner of the premises with any document in support of the ownership of the premises of the consenter like municipal Khata copy or electricity Bill copy. For shared properties also, the same documents can be uploaded.

Proof of Bank account

Scanned copy of the first page of bank passbook or the relevant page of bank statement or scanned copy of a cancelled cheque containing name of proprietor or business entity , bank account no. , MICR ,IFSC and branch details including code.

Digital Signature

All application for GST registration must be digitally signed with a class 2 digital signature. Hence, its important that digital signature be obtained for the following person who is authorized to sign the GST registration application  before beginning the application proess.




Benefit of GST for the Centre and the States

According to experts, by implementing the GST, India will gain $15 billion a year. This is because, it will promote more export business, create more employment opportunities for people and boost growth of product. It will divide the burden of tax between manufacturing and services.


Benefit of GST for individuals and companies

In the GST system, taxes for both Centre and State will be collected at the point of sale. Both will be charged on the manufacturing cost. Individuals will be benefited by this as prices are likely to come down and lower prices mean more consumption, and more consumption means more production, thereby helping in the growth of the companies.

• Some Economist say that GST in India would impact negatively on the real estate market. It would add up to 8 percent to the cost of new homes and reduce demand by about 12 percent.


•Some Economist says that CGST (Central GST), SGST (State GST) are nothing but new names for Central Excise/Service Tax, VAT and CST.


Almost 140 countries have already implemented the GST including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and Pakistan.
